
Pampore, May 8: A one-day symposium on the life, poetry, and literary contributions of legendary Kashmiri poetess Habba Khatoon was organised by the Sahitya Academy Delhi at Degree College Pampore on Thursday. The event witnessed participation from eminent scholars, literary figures, academicians, students, and cultural enthusiasts who gathered to celebrate the timeless legacy of one of Kashmir’s most revered literary icons.
The symposium aimed to highlight the literary brilliance of Habba Khatoon and discuss the continued relevance of her poetry and philosophy in the contemporary social and cultural landscape. Speakers at the event described Habba Khatoon not merely as a poetess, but as a symbol of Kashmiri identity, emotional expression, and resilience whose verses continue to inspire generations across the Valley and beyond.
The programme commenced with a warm welcome address by senior Sahitya Academy official Anupam Tiwari, who greeted the distinguished guests, scholars, faculty members, and students attending the event. In his address, he emphasized the importance of preserving regional literature and promoting awareness about the rich literary traditions of Kashmir among younger generations.

Minister of State and Chairperson Dr. Sayed Darakshan Andrabi attended the event as the chief guest. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Andrabi praised the efforts of the Sahitya Academy in organising literary programmes that help preserve and promote Kashmir’s rich cultural and linguistic heritage. She stated that literature serves as a bridge between generations and societies and stressed the need to encourage young people to engage more deeply with their native language and literary traditions.
Dr. Andrabi also spoke about the enduring influence of Habba Khatoon on Kashmiri culture and identity. She remarked that the poetess continues to inspire women, writers, and artists through her powerful expression and emotional depth. According to her, such symposiums play an important role in reviving cultural awareness and strengthening connections with Kashmir’s historical literary legacy.
Hundreds of students from different colleges and schools participated enthusiastically in the symposium.
